Shirkat Gah – Women’s Resource Centre
 

Shirkat Gah has been maintaining specialized documentation centres at Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar.

Lahore Office

Lahore Centre represents one of the most comprehensive collections of published and unpublished reading material related to women issues. Through its precious collection the centre aims to provide a comprehensive perspective regarding women struggles for empowerment and development programmes and schemes. It caters to the information needs of its internal and external users.

Collection Development

The Lahore documentation centre is growing steadily, till December 2009 its collection includes 9800 books, 4370 articles, 10100 serials’ articles, 585 annual reports, 731 A.V. material CDs and DVDs, besides general books on gender/women studies, it also includes Reference books, Bibliographies, Encyclopedias and Dictionaries, Handbooks, Directories, Reports of committees, Commissions, Working groups, Census, Laws and Acts. It has built up an impressive collection of news clippings which is heavily used by researchers for current issues like, role of women in development, environment, reproductive health, violence against women, women rights, honour killings, karo-kari, marriage and divorce, dowry etc.

The Documentation centre has vast sources of material in the form of Journals / Newsletters / Bulletins received gratis and purchased. It subscribes 8 foreign 15 local journals and eight local news papers for clipping on more than 150 subject headings.

Database

The centre currently maintains IN Magic DBTEXT Works database for easy/speedy storage and retrieval of information. The components of the database are:

Books

It consists of 9,800 entries of books, monographs, institutional publications, government documents, conference proceedings till December 2009.

Articles

This database comprises 4,370 entries of selected articles from Newspapers, periodicals and e-mails etc. These are classified according to Akshara scheme.

Serials

The Serials database comprises entries of 10,100 selected articles from research journals and periodicals present at the centre.

Audio-Visual

It comprises entries of 731 video documentaries on women issues, audio cassettes and CD’s.

Annual Reports

It consists of entries of annual reports of renowned national and international NGOs and private sector organizations.

Information Services

The centre acts as clearing house of information in the area of gender studies and provides a number of information services to its users by responding to reference and research queries through phone/post and e-mail. Literature searches, bibliographic services and reprographic services. For current awareness, “Current Aware Service CAS weekly” is provided to internal users. It consists of photocopies of content pages of journals received as gratis or subscribed. Its back files are maintained for potential users.

News Clippings Digital Archive System

The Documentation Centre is maintaining Database of News clippings for Research purposes. It has collection of News since 1982 and now it is in the phase of digitization of these News clippings in the database “News clippings Digital Archival System” Presently we have full text searchable database from year 2009 to onward of National and International important news. The Documentation Centre is covering eight national newspapers which include Daily Times, Dawn, The Nation, The News, Daily Jang, Daily Khabrain, Daily Pakistan and Daily Nawa-e-Waqt.

Reprographic Service

Documentation Centre also provides the facility of photocopying for the researchers under copyrights rules and regulations. Visitors and Researchers can get the photocopy of their required documents on their own cost on subsidized rates. Copy of Audio-visual material is also available for Researchers on nominal cost.

Users

The centre essentially caters the information needs of Shirkat Gah’s internal users but a large number of research scholars, activists, students, media persons, faculty members of colleges, universities and other institutions use the centre for their research projects approximately 300 users annually use the centre facilities.

Karachi Office

Karachi Documentation Centre holds one of the most specialized collections of published, unpublished and electronic information resources related to Women Issues. Through our collection we aim to provide information regarding Women Rights, Empowerment, Reproductive Health, Green Economics and Globalization, WTO etc. We cater the needs of Karachi Shirkat Gah internal and external users.

Collection Development

Karachi Documentation Centre is developing gradually, till December 2009 its collection includes 4149 books, 1525 general articles, 927 serials articles, 195 annual reports, 215 A.V material CDs and DVDs. Besides general books, it also includes Reference Books, Bibliographies, Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Handbooks, Yearbooks, Directories, and Reports of commission, Census Reports, Laws and Acts. We have build up a viable collection of news clippings which is used by our internal/external users for current issues, like women empowerment, women development, reproductive health, green economics and globalization, WTO, violence against women, hudood ordinance, honor killing, marriage, environment etc.

Documentation Centre subscribes 6 national, 2 international and 9 local newspapers for clipping.

The new arrival has been placed near entrance door of Documentation Centre. The flappers/dust covers of new books are also placed on the notice board of Documentation Centre.

Reprographic Service

Documentation Centre also provides the facility of photocopying. Visitors and Researchers can get the photocopy of your required document’s their own cost. CD/DVD writer is available for Visitors and Researchers to get material on CD/DVD.

Users

Timings

Peshawar Documentation Centre remains open five days a week from Monday to Friday from 9.00 am. To 5.00 pm.
